Introduction
Civil services is a highly competitive exam which is conducted by UPSC every year. It is a prestigious job in India and provides an opportunity to work at various levels in the Government of India. The candidates who are interested in taking up this career can apply for the exam after completing their graduation or post-graduation from any recognised institution.
Who is eligible for Civil Services Exam?
The eligibility for the civil services exam is:
Age: Candidates must be between 21 and 25 years old on the date of their application. For example, if you were born on June 1, 1993 (your birthday), then you are eligible to apply for the civil service exam.
Class 10 pass or equivalent: To qualify for this examination, candidates must have passed their Class 10 with at least 50% marks in aggregate and should not have studied more than two years after completing their graduation from high school or equivalent institution.* Age limit: Candidates should not have reached 27 years when they apply for this examination.* Age relaxation facility - For SC/ST category candidates who do not possess 10th Pass Certificate but possess certificate issued by Central Board of Secondary Education in India under 'Matriculation' category (i) up to 30% relaxation may be allowed as per rules mentioned below;
"The central government shall provide relaxation up to 30% in all matters related thereto".
What are the subjects that can be selected?
The subjects that can be selected are:
English
General Knowledge (English, Civics and Geography)
Arithmetic/Mathematics (All rounder)
Reasoning/Quantitative Aptitude.
When to appear for the exam?
The exam is conducted twice a year, in the months of June and December. You need to appear for it once at least six months prior to the date of your call letter, as per UPSC norms.
The next examination will be held on December 2023 while last date to apply for it is 10th September 2023.
The examination is conducted in two phases. The first phase consists of a preliminary test and mains exam. In the preliminary test, candidates are evaluated on their general knowledge, reasoning ability and logical thinking skills. The second phase is the main examination where candidates have to appear for interviews as well as write a research paper.
What is the selection procedure?
The selection procedure is a two-tier system. First, you have to appear for the written exam followed by an interview.
The first tier of this selection process is the general studies exam and it covers topics such as logic, reasoning and quantitative aptitude tests. This exam consists of three sections: General Studies (25 marks), Aptitude Test (30 marks) and Optional Subject (5 marks). The second stage involves an interview conducted by an officer from the Department of Personnel & Training (DOP&T).
The interview is an opportunity for the candidate to put across their views on various issues, as well as explain their knowledge about the subject. Candidates can also ask questions from the interviewer during this stage of selection process.
