Knowing JEST Exam : Exam Pattern, Eligibility Criteria And Preparation Tips

Prior to 2005 and exams conducted by AERB as Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) students were required to appear for Board examinations (usually held in June) twice a year. To be eligible for appearing for the JEST Computer Science, Physics or Cognitive Science test, a student needs to appear for the CBSE class X examination twice . The first attempt, would be conducted in June followed by another at the end of the academic year. Students who had failed in their earlier attempts would not be allowed to appear again without getting an explicit permission from AERB.

Nowadays however all CBSE affiliated institutes conduct JEST Computer Science, Physics or Cognitive Sciences test every year which is mandatory if a student wants to participate in PhD-only programs offered by these institutes. This one time test is held under CBSE in February/March before finalizing the admission list which is usually done during June

JEST is conducted by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. It is a national level exam that is conducted only once in a year and admissions are given to candidates on the basis of JEST score. Candidates can apply for admission to PhD/Integrated PhD programmes in Physics or Theoretical Computer Science or Neuroscience or Computational Biology in prestigious institutes all over India like Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), IITs, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) etc., provided they have secured admission through JEST Exam.

The eligibility criteria to appear for JEST are as follows:

You must be a graduate or equivalent in any discipline.

You should have obtained your degree from an institute that is accredited by AICTE/UGC/DEC (approved list).

The exam pattern of JEST consists of two sections, namely Section A and Section B:

Section A consists of objective type questions based on English language proficiency and Quantitative aptitude with each section having 75 marks each.

Section B consists of subjective type questions regarding the reasoning skills, analytical ability and general awareness with each section having 100 marks.
