Rock in the middle of the sea where Swami Vivekananda meditated,
Today I visited the monument built at that place. The Swami Vivekananda Memorial is located about 400 meters from the sea on two rocky islands in Kanyakumari. This is dedicated to Indian philosopher Swami Vivekananda, who came here in 1892 and said he meditated here before attending the World Religious Conference in Chicago in 1893.
On the rock is the Vivekananda Rock Memorial built with a combination of all Indian architectural styles in 1970. The whole monument has two independent mandaps called Shripad Mandap and Vivekananda Mandap. There is also a meditation tent for meditation. Swami Vivekananda's Adamkad bronze statue has attractive features of the monument in his 'parivrajak' pose.
This rock has great religious significance too. It is believed that at this place Devi Kanya Kumari did penance. The sacred footprints of the goddess can be seen on the rock. A small launch that looks like human feet. Hence it is named Sri Pad Parai a Tamil word that reflects the rock which is sanctified by the feet of the Goddess.
Close up the 1c writer of Tirukkural. The magnificent standing statue of Tamil poet Tiruvalluvar of BC appears, which is about 133 feet long. This site is the central preserved monument of Indian archaeological survey.
